FMC launches the insecticide Malathion in combination with Cyantraniliprole in Brazil

Recently, FMC announced the launch of Malathion 1000 EC in Brazil, which has a "high potency and knock-down effect" in the control of Hypothenemus hampei. 

FMC expressed that technology and innovation are critical to improving crop health and improving the quality of cereals, especially for coffee crops. Malathion 1000 EC formulation can take effect quickly and has the effect of driving out the snout. Studies on malathion in coffee plantations have shown a 5% reduction in crop damage compared to market norms, as the knock-down effect of the product does not create an imbalance with other insects.

With this solution, growers can control as much as they want, with higher quality and profit, according to the crop manager at FMC. Malathion also has the advantage of a long half-life in the soil, degradation of nearly 90% within 24 hours, low residue period, and contact and absorption effects. In view of this different mode of action, FMC recommends that malathion be rotated with other active ingredients in coffee plantations to avoid resistance to it.

Malathion can also be used in combination with another FMC insecticide, Cyantraniliprole. Coffee borer is a migratory pest, which leaves some coffee beans on the coffee tree during mechanized harvesting. These coffee beans will become the inoculants of the pests year after year, leading to the occurrence of pests. Malathion can be applied during the adult stage of the borer, and due to its strong knocking down effect, the pests can be applied when they move in the field. Therefore, the use of malathion for initial control, while long-term residual control can be completed by Cyantraniliprole, this integrated control method will help reduce the amount of damage to coffee crops, thereby improving the quality of coffee beans harvest.
