North American Chemical Companies Face Varied Performance

The third quarter results for several major chemical companies in North America reflect a mixed performance, with some companies experiencing declines while others show growth.


Dow reported a net sales decline of 24% to $10.7 billion in the third quarter, compared to $7.6 billion in the same period last year. The company's GAAP net income was $327 million, down from $760 million in the previous year.


LyondellBasell reported a 13.3% decline in sales revenue to $10.625 billion in the third quarter, compared to $12.25 billion in the same period last year. However, the company's EBITDA increased by 21.8% to $1.356 billion.


ExxonMobil reported a 1.1% increase in net sales to $6.117 billion in the third quarter. The company's net profit was $298 million, up 10.7%, and EBITDA reached $1.27 billion, up 12.6%.


Nutrien reported a 31% decrease in sales revenue to $5.631 billion in the third quarter, compared to $8.188 billion in the previous year. The company's net profit was $82 million, down 95% from $1.853 billion in the same period last year.


PPG Industries reported a 4% increase in net sales to $4.644 billion in the third quarter. The company's net profit increased by 29% to $430 million.


Ecolab reported an 8% increase in net sales to $3.958 billion in the third quarter, compared to $3.669 billion in the same period last year. The company's net profit increased by 16% to $404 million.

Air Products reported a 4.8% decrease in sales revenue to $3.034 billion in the third quarter. The GAAP net profit was $2.01 billion, an increase of 170%, and the adjusted EBITDA was $3.9 billion, up 8%.


International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF) reported an 8% decrease in net sales to $2.82 billion in the third quarter. The EBITDA was $506 million, down 10%.


Celanese reported an 18.3% increase in net sales to $2.723 billion in the third quarter. The net income was $949 million, a significant increase of 392%.


Sherwin-Williams reported a 10.5% increase in net sales to $2.31 billion in the third quarter. However, the net profit decreased by 66.3% to $302.5 million.


Eastman Chemical reported a 16.3% decrease in sales revenue to $2.267 billion in the third quarter. The pretax income was $256 million, down 21%, and the adjusted pretax income was also $256 million, down 23%.


CF Industries reported a sales revenue decline of 45.15% to $1.273 billion in the third quarter. The net income attributable to common stockholders was $164 million, down 62.6%, and the adjusted EBITDA was $445 million, down 54.7%.


Huntsman reported a revenue of $1.506 billion in the third quarter, representing a decrease of 25.07%. The adjusted net income was $27 million, down 81%, and the adjusted EBITDA was $136 million, down 50%.


These results indicate the diverse performance of North American chemical companies, with some facing challenges due to factors such as market conditions, pricing pressures, and supply chain disruptions. Others have managed to achieve growth and overcome these challenges. The industry continues to adapt to changing dynamics and strives for recovery and sustainable growth in the coming quarters.
