Can the New Minoxidil Foam Revolutionize Hair Loss Treatment in China?
Hair loss affects a significant number of people in China, with over 250 million individuals experiencing some form of alopecia. To meet the growing demand for hair growth solutions, Sansheng Pharma's subsidiary, Zhejiang Wansheng Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., recently gained approval from the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) for their minoxidil foam, branded as Mandi. This marks the first marketing approval for a minoxidil foam formulation in China.
Mandi foam is a next-generation anti-hair loss product based on minoxidil tincture, offering enhanced benefits over traditional topical preparations. Notably, the foam formulation does not contain propylene glycol, reducing the risk of allergic reactions. Its low density enables better distribution on the epidermis, ensuring uniformity and effectiveness. The foam administration method allows for precise application, targeting specific areas of hair loss and avoiding unexpected hair growth in unwanted locations.
Clinical trials comparing Mandi foam with the comparator ROGAINE (5% minoxidil foam) demonstrated equivalent efficacy, safety, and tolerability. The positive results met the pre-defined statistical endpoint, further validating the product's effectiveness.
The approval of Mandi foam comes at a time when the hair loss treatment market in China is booming. With factors like work-related stress and the fast-paced modern lifestyle contributing to hair loss, the market is expected to reach approximately 41.2 billion yuan by 2026, reflecting a compound annual growth rate of nearly 12%.
While minoxidil and finasteride are the commonly used drugs for hair loss treatment, Mandi foam's unique attributes make it an attractive option for consumers. Unlike finasteride, which is an oral drug primarily suitable for men, minoxidil is a topical solution that can be used by both men and women, making it more popular in the market.
Currently, China has multiple approved minoxidil products, with Wansheng Pharmaceutical's minoxidil tincture ranking first in online pharmacy sales, reaching approximately 660 million yuan in the first half of this year.
In addition to Mandi foam, the industry is also witnessing the development of innovative drugs for alopecia areata. Pfizer's JAK inhibitor baritinib and ritoxitinib tosilate capsule have gained approval for severe alopecia areata in adults and adolescents, respectively. Several other innovative drugs and generic versions are also being researched and developed to address various forms of alopecia.
With the introduction of Mandi foam, Sansheng Pharma aims to revolutionize hair loss treatment in China by providing an effective and user-friendly solution. As the market continues to grow, the availability of innovative products like Mandi foam offers hope to individuals seeking effective remedies for their hair loss concerns.
