Proposed Revisions to Infant Formula Additive Regulations in Singapore

Singapore's regulatory authority, the Singapore Food Agency, recently released a consultation document proposing amendments to the existing food regulations concerning additives in infant formula milk powder. One significant change outlined in the consultation document is the inclusion of regulations pertaining to the use of three-chloro sucrose in soy-based beverages. This addition will ensure that the appropriate limits and conditions are in place for the use of this additive, thereby safeguarding the health and well-being of infants consuming such products.

Additionally, the proposed revisions introduce the allowance of two specific sodium salts of nucleotides, namely sodium salt of 3'-sialyllactose (3'-SL) and sodium salt of 6'-sialyllactose (6'-SL), in infant formula milk powder. The maximum permitted usage levels for these additives are defined based on the age group of infants consuming the formula.

For infants aged six months or below, the proposed maximum usage level of sodium salt of 3'-sialyllactose (3'-SL) is 20mg/100ml, while for infants aged between six and twelve months, the proposed maximum usage level is 15mg/100ml. Similarly, the proposed maximum usage level of sodium salt of 6'-sialyllactose (6'-SL) for infants aged six months or below is 40mg/100ml, and for infants aged between six and twelve months, it is 30mg/100ml.

In addition to the above revisions, the consultation document also addresses the use of trichlorosucrose, an additive commonly found in soy-based beverages. The proposed regulations stipulate a maximum usage limit of 400mg/kg for trichlorosucrose in soy-based beverages.
