L'Oréal uses new ingredient to address localized skin pigmentation issues

ECHEMI 2024-03-12

The French cosmetics giant has unveiled some details about Melasyl, its new multi-patented molecule designed to address localized pigmentation issues that lead to age spots and post-acne marks.

L'Oréal claims the new ingredient, already available in La Roche-Posay's Mela B3 range of products, including MelaB3 Serum and MelaB3 SPF30, helps provide a more even, natural-looking skin tone and eliminates even the most persistent signs of skin tone.

Half of people report at least one skin pigmentation problem, according to a landmark global epidemiological study on pigment disorders.

"Half of people report having skin pigmentation issues, and a third of them have a reduced quality of life as a result, and the impact of visible spots or post-acne marks is clearly more than just superficial," Anne Colonna said, global head of advanced research at L'Oréal Group. "Melasyl is a first-of-its-kind ingredient that helps address localized skin pigmentation issues, with proven efficacy and ease of use that will help more people regain their confidence."

L'Oréal Group said its L'Oréal Paris and Vichy brands will launch products in the future to give consumers greater access to professional formulas containing the new ingredient.

Melasyl was first presented at the 2023 World Congress of Dermatology in Singapore, alongside the release of the first global epidemiological study on pigmentary disorders. Melasyl recently presented at the American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting in San Diego, March 8-12, 2024.
