Cambodian Cashew Exports Generate a Record $543 Million in the First Quarter

ECHEMI 2024-04-25

Cambodia's cashew industry has witnessed a remarkable surge in exports during the first quarter of 2024, resulting in a record-breaking revenue of $543 million. According to a report by the Cambodian Cashew Association, the country exported a total of 424,000 tons of cashew nuts to Vietnam, experiencing a 13% year-on-year growth.

The report released by the Cambodian Cashew Association reveals that Cambodia produced 474,000 tons of cashew nuts during the first three months of 2024. Out of this total production, an overwhelming 424,000 tons were exported to neighboring Vietnam. This export volume resulted in a staggering revenue of $543 million, representing a significant 13% increase compared to the previous year.

The Chairman of the Cambodian Cashew Association, Uon Silot, highlighted the challenges faced by the industry earlier this year. In February, cashew prices experienced a sharp decline, prompting the association to urge its members to temporarily withhold the sale of raw cashews and instead focus on sun-drying them before selling. As a result, cashew exports to Vietnam plummeted by 32% during that period. However, the situation took a positive turn in mid-March when cashew prices started to recover. The price of raw cashews surged to 5,000 Cambodian riels per kilogram, reaching its highest level in 15 years. Meanwhile, the average price of dried cashews stood at $1,200 per ton.

In addition to the impressive export figures, the report also indicates that Cambodia's cashew exports for the entire year of 2023 amounted to 656,000 tons, generating a total revenue of $837 million. Although the export volume experienced a 7.6% decline compared to the previous year, the industry remains robust and poised for growth.

The surge in cashew exports from Cambodia to Vietnam can be attributed to several factors. Firstly, the close proximity between the two countries facilitates smooth trade and logistics operations. Additionally, Vietnam's strong demand for cashew nuts, both for domestic consumption and for its processing industry, presents a lucrative market for Cambodian producers. Furthermore, Cambodia's efforts to improve cashew quality and enhance production techniques have contributed to its competitiveness in the global market.

Cambodia's cashew industry has experienced an exceptional start to 2024, with record-breaking cashew exports to Vietnam resulting in a revenue of $543 million in the first quarter. Despite initial challenges faced by the industry, such as the decline in prices, the recovery and subsequent surge in cashew prices have propelled the sector forward. With its strategic geographical location, increasing quality standards, and strong market demand, Cambodia is well-positioned to further expand its cashew exports and solidify its position as a key player in the global cashew industry.
