The bird repellent market has great growth potential and is expected to reach $420 million by 2028
The bird repellent is a formulation that repels birds through specific chemical composition and physical properties. This formulation is widely used in agriculture, forestry and public places to reduce the damage of birds to crops, trees and facilities.
According to APO statistics and forecasts, the global bird repellent market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.6%, from US $320 million in 2021 to US $420 million in 2028. On the whole, with the growth of the global population and the increase in demand for food, resulting in the continuous expansion of the cultivated land area, seriously squeezing the living space of birds, forcing birds to eat crops, thus promoting the demand for bird repelling products. The agricultural sector is the major factor driving the growth of the bird repellent market in the future. At present, the main birds that harm crops are: magpies, pheasants, sparrows, grey doves, egrets, wild ducks and so on.
The harm of birds to agriculture is mainly manifested in:
(1) Feeding spring seeds. Due to the lack of food in the north in spring, spring sowing crop seeds have become the main food objects for some birds, such as spring sowing corn, because of the fine sowing sowing method, birds eat corn seeds caused by the lack of ridges and seedlings, has caused a huge impact on corn production. In addition, in the southern spring rice planting area, bird repellent seed coating agent has become a just-needed product, and a number of domestic head enterprises have entered the game.
(2) Feed on the seeds of mature crops. In some areas, bird feeding during the mature period of wheat, millet and other crops has become the main factor of yield reduction.
(3) Pecking at the ripe fruit. For example, grapes, pears, watermelons and other crops, pecking not only affects the appearance of the fruit to reduce the marketability, but also the pecking part is easy to cause infestation of diseases and pests, aggravating the harm.
How dangerous are birds?
According to experimental statistics, a sparrow can eat 1/2 of its own body weight in 24 hours, and the bird damage rate in German vineyards is as high as 80%. According to the New Zealand Plant Protection Society, nearly 87 per cent of growers suffer significant yield losses due to bird infestations each year, in some cases the damage is equivalent to 20 per cent of a grower's total production that year. According to the incomplete statistics of Qidong Agricultural and Rural Bureau (2020), the economic losses caused by bird damage to crops such as corn, peanuts and wheat in Qihai area every year reach at least 100 million yuan.
In China's agricultural field, compared with the increasingly serious bird hazards, the development of bird-related products is seriously lagging behind. Through seed treatment or granulation on field crops, it has become the most economical and efficient means, and the market demand has gradually risen, becoming a popular track for the layout of the pesticide industry.
In order to regulate the healthy development of bird repellents, on October 26, 2020, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs issued a paper that classified chemical synthesis or mixtures of several substances and their formulation that are mainly used in agricultural production to repel birds or that are derived from biological and other natural substances as pesticide management.
