New Record Set: Brazil's Beer Factory Registrations Surge to 1,847 in 2023

In a remarkable display of growth, the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture recently unveiled the "2024 Beer Yearbook" (Anuário da Cerveja 2024), which revealed that the country's registered beer factories have once again set a new record. The number of registered beer factories in Brazil has increased from 1,729 in 2022 to an impressive 1,847 in 2023.

The report highlights that the state of São Paulo continues to dominate the landscape, with 410 registered beer factories as of the end of 2023, a notable increase of 23 from the previous year. Trailing closely behind is the state of Rio Grande do Sul, which saw the highest growth, adding 25 new beer factories in 2023.

Márcio Maciel, the Executive President of the National Union of the Beer Industry (Sindicerv), emphasizes the importance of this yearbook as a valuable tool for public institutions to study and stimulate the development of the beer industry. The industry currently accounts for approximately 2% of Brazil's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and provides employment opportunities for over 2.5 million people.

The study also indicates that the surge in the number of beer factories has driven an increase in the variety of beer products. In 2022, Brazil registered 42,831 beer products, but this number has now risen to 45,648 in 2023. It's worth noting that a single beer can be registered under multiple commercial brands, and the Ministry of Agriculture has recorded a staggering 60,334 registered beer brands, surpassing the total number of brands registered across the entire European Union.

Interestingly, the data reveals a growing preference among Brazilian consumers for domestically produced beers. Since 2019, the country's beer imports have been steadily declining, with a 51.1% reduction in import volumes between 2022 and 2023. The Ministry of Agriculture attributes this trend to the increased supply of domestic beer products, reducing the need for foreign beer purchases.

Concurrently, Brazil's beer exports have continued to grow, with a 18.6% increase in export volumes in 2022, generating over $155 million in revenue for the country's beer factories.

This remarkable expansion in Brazil's beer industry highlights the nation's dynamic and thriving beverage sector, driven by the growing demand for diverse and locally produced beer options.
