Ongoing Investigation into Deaths Potentially Linked to Monascus-Derived Supplements in Japan

On this past Friday, Japanese healthcare product manufacturer Kobayashi Pharmaceutical formally announced that it is conducting a thorough investigation into 76 reported deaths potentially associated with its tablets containing red yeast rice. Red yeast rice, a common cholesterol-lowering ingredient, has been widely used in food, alcoholic beverages, and traditional medicines in East Asia for centuries after undergoing fungal fermentation.

Earlier this year, Kobayashi Pharmaceutical began investigating five reported deaths potentially linked to its over-the-counter products, after receiving dozens of customer reports of kidney issues. While the company's statement explicitly noted that the direct causes leading to hospitalization or death may not be directly related to kidney disease, there are clearly multiple cases involving Monascus-related products that may have caused harm in some way.

For the initial five investigated deaths, Kobayashi revealed that one of the victims was not known to have consumed red yeast rice. Additionally, beyond the initial four cases, the company has received 1,656 consultations related to medical assistance and has conducted detailed investigations into 76 potentially death-related cases.

On March 22nd, Kobayashi Pharmaceutical proactively announced a recall of three tablet products containing white koji mold. Subsequently, government officials conducted strict inspections of the company's facilities after potential harmful substances produced by this fungus were detected during testing. As a prominent Japanese brand, Kobayashi's health-related products are widely popular, but this incident has undoubtedly dealt a severe blow to the company's reputation.

On Friday, Kobayashi Pharmaceutical stated that it will spare no effort in determining the specific causes and scope of the health damage, including whether organs other than the kidneys may have been affected. Last Friday, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi noted that the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare had previously requested the company to submit daily progress reports on the investigation and provide more detailed information, but regrettably, no specific figures have been reported so far.

Furthermore, Kobayashi Pharmaceutical has also supplied red yeast rice to around 50 Japanese companies and two Taiwanese companies. Earlier this year, Taiwan's health authorities, upon receiving related panic reports, have instructed Taiwanese companies to issue a preventative recall of 154 products containing red yeast rice.
