South Korean cosmetics surpass France in US market share for the first time
According to data from the United States International Trade Commission (USITC), South Korean cosmetics have surpassed France in the US imported cosmetics market share from January to April this year, making significant gains in the US market. This development highlights the rapid growth and increasing popularity of Korean beauty products in the global beauty industry.
The USITC data network revealed on June 27 that in the first four months of this year, South Korea ranked first in the US imported cosmetics market share, with exports of US$477.1 million, accounting for 20.1% of the market share. France, traditionally the global cosmetics leader, ranked second with exports of US$459.43 million, accounting for 19.3% of the market share. Canada followed closely behind, exporting US$327.23 million worth of cosmetics to the United States.
Given France's long-standing dominance in the industry, South Korea's leap to the top of the US cosmetics market is noteworthy. Historically, French brands such as L'Oreal, Chanel and Dior have set the benchmark for luxury and quality in cosmetics. However, the innovative formulas and unique ingredients of Korean beauty products have attracted the attention of consumers around the world, driving its rapid rise.
South Korea topped the monthly import rankings in January and April this year, while France remained at the top in February and March.
K-Beauty's surge in popularity is not limited to the US market. In 2022, Korean cosmetics surpassed France in the Japanese market, a position it had held for nearly 30 years. This achievement earned K-Beauty the title of "reversal idol" and further consolidated its global position.
E-commerce giant Amazon plays a vital role in the expansion of Korean beauty. During Amazon's spring promotion this year, Korean beauty sales increased by an impressive 200% compared to the same period last year. Six of the top 12 beauty products on Amazon are Korean products, highlighting the huge consumer demand for Korean beauty products.
Kim Il-ho, Director of Global Development at the Korea Small and Medium Enterprises Agency, commented on K-Beauty's success: "This year, six of the top 12 beauty products on Amazon are Korean products, highlighting the rapid growth of K-Beauty. We are providing various support measures such as export logistics discounts to help high-quality products gain recognition among overseas consumers and consolidate their position in the cross-border trade (CBT) market."
Support from government agencies such as the Korea Small and Medium Enterprises Agency has played an important role in promoting Korean beauty products in international markets. Initiatives such as export logistics discounts and promotional activities have helped Korean products gain recognition and gain a strong position in the cross-border trade market.
As Korean cosmetics continue to gain popularity in the United States and other global markets, the industry is expected to grow further. The rapid rise of Korean beauty not only challenges the traditional dominance of French cosmetics, but also reflects the changing preferences of consumers seeking innovative, high-quality and affordable beauty products.
