The difference between calcined petroleum coke (cpc) and petroleum coke
Calcined petroleum coke (cpc) and petroleum coke have similar names, but they are two completely different products. What is the difference between the two? Now let's take a look together.
Appearance
Calcined petroleum coke (cpc) is black blocky in appearance, with irregular shapes and different sizes, and has a strong metallic luster. After calcination, the pores of the carbon particles are more transparent.
Compared with CPC, petroleum coke has little difference in shape, but the metallic luster of petroleum coke is weaker, the particle surface is not as dry as calcined petroleum coke (cpc), and the pores are not as transparent as calcined petroleum coke (cpc).
Preparation process
Petroleum coke is made from petroleum raw materials by high-temperature carbonization. Its main element is carbon, and the remaining elements are hydrogen, nitrogen, sulfur, metal elements and some mineral impurities.
Calcined petroleum coke (cpc) is made by calcining petroleum coke. Raw material calcination is an important process in the production of calcined petroleum coke. During the calcination process, the element structure and composition of the carbon raw materials will undergo a series of changes. Calcination can remove most of the volatile matter and moisture in the raw materials. With the removal of most of the volatile matter and moisture, the carbon volume shrinks, the density increases, and the mechanical strength becomes stronger, thereby reducing the secondary shrinkage of the product during the calcination process. The more fully the raw materials are calcined, the more beneficial it is to the product quality.
Uses
Calcined petroleum coke (cpc) is mainly used to produce graphite electrodes, carbon paste products, corundum, food-grade phosphorus industry, metallurgical industry and calcium carbide, among which graphite electrodes are the most widely used.
Petroleum coke can be used as the main material of calcium carbide to produce silicon carbide and boron carbide as grinding materials in calcium carbide. It can also be used to make various types of electrodes, including lead-acid batteries, lithium-ion batteries and supercapacitors, or used as an additive for casting materials to improve the fluidity and wear resistance of casting materials. By category, needle coke in petroleum coke is mainly used for high-power graphite electrodes, and sponge coke is mainly used in the steel and carbon industries.
