Dow Inc. Second Quarter 2024 Financial Highlights: Sales Growth but Profits Under Pressure

ECHEMI 2024-08-08

On July 29, 2024, Dow, one of the world's leading materials technology companies, disclosed its financial results for the second quarter of fiscal year 2024. The detailed report points out that while overall global sales volume increased by 1% over the same period last year, mainly due to a strong recovery in the United States and Canada, the company's EBIT from operating activities fell by $66 million, resulting in a total of only $819 million.

Jim Fitterling, Dow's chairman and CEO, weighed in on the financial situation. He believes that the pace of recovery of the global economy is not as expected, but the company will continue to pay attention to the optimization of capital operations, cost reduction, and the company's operating rate to adjust to better adapt to the current market demand. At the same time, Fitterling stressed that the company's close collaboration with customers has enabled the company to capture the growth in demand in multiple sectors such as packaging, electronics, home and personal care.

Despite the decline in the company's margins, it is worth noting that EBIT from operating activities increased by $145 million sequentially, driven by strong performance in the company's Functional Materials & Coatings and Packaging & Specialty Plastics segments. Looking ahead, Fitterling said that in the second half of 2024, the company will continue to strive to achieve sequential growth in operating earnings, and rely on its global scale, strategic cost advantages and countercyclical growth investment strategy, steadily advancing the company's goal of improving earnings and increasing shareholder returns.

Despite the impact of the macroeconomic slowdown on Dow, the company maintained its overall volume growth trend in the second quarter of 2024. However, the company's EBIT from operating activities declined due to lower margins and higher maintenance costs. Going forward, Dow will continue to implement a variety of strategies to optimize its operational efficiency and capitalize on its strengths to seize market opportunities in order to achieve continuous improvement and improvement in performance.
