Hexion and Clariant Collaborate to Advance Fire Protection Coating Solutions
Hexion announces a strategic partnership with Clariant, an innovative partnership that combines Hexion’s expertise in VeoVa™ vinyl ester-based adhesives with Clariant’s intumescent additives to optimize fire protection systems in critical applications and develop cutting-edge intumescent coatings.
Intumescent coatings play a critical role in protecting life and property by forming a thermally insulating foam layer in the event of a fire. This layer helps maintain the structural integrity of a building, providing occupants with critical time to evacuate safely.
“Our collaboration with Clariant marks a major milestone in our advancement of fire protection technology,” said Jeroen Jansema, Vice President and General Manager of Hexion’s Versatics™ Acids and Derivatives business. “By leveraging our VeoVa monomers and Clariant’s intumescent additives, we are optimizing vinyl acetate-based adhesives to enhance charring and fire resistance, ensuring superior performance in critical situations.”
VeoVa vinyl ester-based adhesives offer superior fire protection performance compared to vinyl acetate/ethylene and acrylic-based systems. With increasing VeoVa vinyl ester content, fire protection effectiveness is significantly improved, doubling the protection time. Hexion’s innovative approach allows for thinner coatings to be applied without compromising efficacy. It addresses the critical market need for streamlined fire protection solutions. Hybrid resin concepts enriched with VeoVa vinyl esters deliver improved fire resistance and hydrophobicity.
As Hexion and Clariant continue to push the boundaries of fire protection technology, they reaffirm their dedication to making the built environment safer and more resilient.
“Our joint efforts with Clariant have yielded remarkable results, showcasing the unmatched combination of high performance, aesthetics and ease of use in our technology,” added Jansema.
“We are proud to be working with Hexion to advance the evolution of fire protection coatings,” said Martin John, Global Vice President, Coatings and Adhesives at Clariant. “This collaboration highlights our shared commitment to innovation and safety, enabling us to deliver breakthrough solutions to our customers with our Exolit® AP products. Our state-of-the-art fire testing facilities allow us to rigorously evaluate the fire performance of materials and formulations containing Exolit® flame retardants.”
