Australia and New Zealand Consider Approving Genetically Modified 2'-Fucosyllactose for Infant Formula

ECHEMI 2024-08-15

Australia and New Zealand are evaluating a new proposal to allow the addition of 2' -fucosyl lactose (2'-FL), produced from a genetically modified strain of E. coli, to infant formula. The Food Standards Agency of Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) has announced that it is reviewing an application, number A1308, to approve the use of this ingredient.

In a notice published on August 15, 2024, FSANZ noted that the objective of the application was to approve the use of 2'-FL produced by a specific strain of genetically modified E. coli (W) as a new ingredient in infant formula. The application is currently under review and FSANZ is seeking public comment on this proposed change.

2'-FL is a human whey oligosaccharide (HMO) that occurs naturally in breast milk. It is believed to have multiple health benefits for babies, including supporting gut health, immune function and brain development.

The production of 2'-FL from genetically modified E. coli is a relatively recent development. However, there is growing evidence that it can provide multiple health benefits for babies.

FSANZ's decision to review the application marks a positive step in ensuring that infants receive optimal nutrition. It is important to note that the application is still under review and FSANZ will make a final decision based on available evidence and public feedback.
