Mallinda Launches Breakthrough Vitrimax™ VHM Resins to Enable Economical Full Recycling of Composites

ECHEMI 2025-01-07

Mallinda Inc., a pioneer in advanced polymer technology, announces the launch of Vitrimax™ Versatile Hot Melt (VHM) Resins, a revolutionary Vitrimer-based composite resin system that revolutionizes the way manufacturers process and recycle high-performance composites. This breakthrough technology combines the superior mechanical properties of thermosets with the processing flexibility of thermoplastics, marking a major advance in sustainable manufacturing and enabling economical recycling and reuse of high-performance composites for the first time.

Mallinda’s goal is to achieve 100% recycling and reuse of production waste with Vitrimax™ VHM customers and is committed to end-of-life recycling programs. Designed to be circular at the molecular level, Vitrimax™ resins and their composites can always be profitably recycled at a cost lower than the original input.

“Vitrimax VHM represents a paradigm shift in the composites space. We have successfully bridged the gap between performance and sustainability, providing manufacturers with unprecedented flexibility in scalable manufacturing and processing, while maintaining the structural integrity required by modern applications,” said Philip Taynton, CEO of Mallinda.

This launch follows a successful commercial scale production validation, demonstrating batch consistency at a 200L reactor scale and achieving a batch throughput of 2.1 tonnes per batch. A one-day batch can produce 10,000 square meters of composites. Recognizing the transformative nature of this technology, several Fortune Global 500 companies have already partnered with Mallinda to commercialize VHM resins for their specific needs.

Key Features and Benefits:

Revolutionary Vitrimer Technology: A new class of polymers that combines thermoset performance with thermoplastic processing properties

Infinite recyclability: Enables true circular manufacturing through complete component material recovery

Manufacturing flexibility: Post-cure processing capabilities with tunable glass transition temperature

In-situ repairability: Parts can be reshaped and repaired on-site as needed

Sustainable solutions: Enables economically viable separation and recycling of resins, composite fabrics, and integrated components including precious metals

Self-healing properties: Enhanced durability through stress relief capabilities.

“The industry has long sought a solution that does not compromise between performance and sustainability, and Vitrimax VHM excels in both, providing a true circular solution for composite manufacturing,” said Eduardo Torres, CEO of MTorres America.

This innovation addresses key industry challenges including manufacturing efficiency, waste reduction, and environmental sustainability. The technology enables manufacturers to reprocess scrap and off-spec parts, significantly reducing the overall carbon footprint of their manufacturing process while maintaining high performance standards. Optimized for prepreg processing, the product is immediately available for applications in drones, sporting goods, automotive, marine, and aerospace secondary structures. The Vitrimax™ technology platform will have a huge impact on wind energy, hydrogen pressure vessels and urban air mobility.

“The performance and recyclability of Mallinda’s Vitrimer chemistry has been demonstrated in multiple academic studies. Circularity of composites is challenging, but Vitrimax™ chemistry may be one of the best places to start,” said Professor Steven Nutt, Director of the USC MC Gill Composites Center.
