Global Chemical Giants: 2024 Performance Revealed with Surprising Outcomes
Recent financial disclosures from major multinational chemical corporations highlight a challenging yet optimistic 2024. Despite ongoing economic hurdles, companies like BASF, Eastman Chemical, and Dow have shown resilience and strategic adaptations.
BASF's performance in 2024 has been described as moderate, with sales reaching €65.3 billion, aligning with analyst projections. Although sales volumes slightly increased, price declines impacted overall growth. EBITDA is estimated at €7.9 billion, slightly below earlier forecasts, yet surpassing 2023's €7.7 billion. This growth is largely driven by core business profitability, although Q4 showed a notable slowdown. Despite these challenges, BASF's net profit is expected to significantly exceed the previous year's €225 million, although precise figures remain pending due to missing data from a key investment.
Eastman Chemical reported a robust 2024, driven by specialty materials and additives. The company achieved a 350-basis-point year-over-year increase in Q4 adjusted EBIT margin, with a full-year rise of 190 basis points, thanks to strategic product mix improvements and operational efficiencies. As Eastman looks to 2025, it remains confident in sustained growth, despite global uncertainties. CEO Mark Costa highlights the company's focus on innovative growth and the circular economy, expecting the Kingsport methanolysis facility to boost EBITDA by $75-$100 million in 2025.
Dow took decisive cost-cutting measures amidst persistent economic uncertainty, aiming for a $1 billion annual saving through workforce reductions and decreased service purchases. Dow's 2024 net sales were $43 billion, down from $44.6 billion in 2023, with net income rising to $1.2 billion. Despite a decline in operating EBIT to $2.6 billion, Dow plans to reduce 2025 capital expenditures by $300-$500 million while maintaining competitive positioning.
While 2024 posed significant challenges, these chemical giants are strategically positioning themselves for future growth, leveraging innovation and cost management to navigate an uncertain economic landscape.
