Japan Approves Transgenic Polyphenol Oxidase for Food Use in Revolutionary Odor Control
On February 14, 2025, Japan's Consumer Affairs Agency announced the successful safety review of a transgenic polyphenol oxidase developed by Novozymes, a Danish biotechnology company. This innovative enzyme is derived from a gene sourced from a heat-resistant fungus, which has been integrated into a Aspergillus oryzae strain.
The primary function of this enzyme is to react with quinones and sulfur-containing compounds, effectively neutralizing odors. As a result, it can be added to products such as chewing gum and other candies to achieve enhanced oral deodorization.
This approval marks a significant step forward in food technology, offering a novel solution for managing unpleasant odors in consumables. The successful incorporation of transgenic enzymes into food products showcases the potential for biotechnological advancements to improve consumer experiences while maintaining safety and regulatory standards.
