Santan Launches 500 Ton Carbon Cut Plan Across 7 Airlines with Biodegradable Plastics

ECHEMI 2025-04-27

On April 21, 2025, Santan, the food brand under Capital A, took a bold step by replacing all in-flight disposable plastics with biodegradable PLA alternatives. All cups, lids, and utensils will now be crafted from PLA (polylactic acid), a sustainable material derived from corn and cassava.

Developed by Rightway New Material, PLA offers a dramatic advantage over traditional plastics by breaking down over 90% in industrial composting environments, while regular plastics can linger for centuries. Santan’s new PLA-coated paper cups have also earned home compostability certification, giving passengers an eco-friendlier way to manage waste.

The initiative began in Malaysia and Thailand, with plans to expand across seven airlines under the AirAsia Group.

By adopting PLA packaging, Santan shows that combining superior service with environmental commitment is not only possible but essential.

Santan CEO Catherine Goh stated, “Every flight must be an opportunity to deliver outstanding onboard dining and also contribute positively to the planet.” This shift is projected to reduce 500 tons of carbon emissions annually across Malaysia and Thailand, setting a powerful example for the entire industry.

Recognizing the critical importance of hygiene and operational needs, Santan has also deployed artificial intelligence to optimize food production and inventory. This ensures better forecasting, waste reduction, and higher supply chain efficiency, helping achieve a more sustainable and responsible operation.

Santan’s latest move underscores a broader industry shift where green innovation is becoming essential, not optional.
