BASF Invests Tens of Millions to Boost Semiconductor Grade Sulfuric Acid Capacity New Facility Operational by 2027
On April 29, 2025, BASF announced plans to expand its production of semiconductor-grade sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄), a critical high-purity chemical for advanced chip manufacturing. The new facility, located in Ludwigshafen, Germany, will feature state-of-the-art purity capabilities to meet growing demand across Europe. The plant is scheduled to begin operations in 2027, aligning with the expansion plans of key semiconductor customers. BASF's investment in this project will reach tens of millions of euros.
Europe's increasing construction of chip manufacturing plants has driven up demand for high-quality, ultra-pure chemicals, including sulfuric acid. A strategic partner of BASF is currently building a new chip production facility in Europe, further accelerating this demand. These advanced chips are essential for automotive, mobile communication, and artificial intelligence applications.
The new plant will ensure reliable, localized supply of high-purity sulfuric acid, significantly enhancing supply chain reliability for BASF's partners. Located in the core of BASF's Ludwigshafen integrated chemical site, the facility will utilize advanced production processes and stringent quality controls to meet the exacting standards of semiconductor manufacturing.
