4X Capacity Breakthrough BASF and Group14 Launch Game-Changing Silicon Battery Tech

ECHEMI 2025-05-21

BASF and Group14 have unveiled a next-generation lithium battery solution that dramatically enhances performance through a powerful pairing of advanced materials. Their new silicon-based battery tech delivers up to four times the capacity of conventional graphite anodes, while also offering faster charging, longer life, and improved heat resistance.

This “plug-and-play” innovation combines BASF’s Licity® 2698 X F binder with Group14’s SCC55® silicon-carbon material, addressing the long-standing challenge of silicon’s volume expansion during charge cycles. The result is a durable battery with over 1,000 cycles at room temperature, retaining 80% of capacity, and still achieving 500+ cycles at 45°C, with exceptional energy density.

Graphite anodes are nearing their theoretical performance limits, while silicon’s massive capacity potential—around 4200 mAh/g—makes it the clear front-runner for next-gen batteries. Until now, however, commercial applications were held back by structural instability. BASF’s specialized binder stabilizes high-silicon anodes under stress, and Group14’s SCC55 enhances performance consistency.

Rick Luebbe, CEO of Group14, called this a turning point for scalable, high-performance energy storage. The collaboration allows battery makers to accelerate silicon-based battery production without compromising quality or cycle life.

Dirk Wulff of BASF noted that silicon has now broken free from its earlier limitations. With BASF’s binder chemistry and dispersions expertise, the companies have created a chemistry that exceeds industry benchmarks.

This partnership marks a major milestone in the battery industry’s race to meet rising global energy demands with smarter, longer-lasting, and higher-capacity storage solutions.
