3-Year Manhunt Ends as Key Figure in ₹25 Crore Fake Cancer Drug Syndicate Captured

ECHEMI 2025-05-26

In a significant breakthrough, Delhi Police have apprehended Sabir Alam, a central figure in a ₹25 crore counterfeit cancer drug operation, after a relentless three-year pursuit. Alam was arrested on May 20 in Bardhaman, West Bengal, while on his honeymoon, following a critical tip-off and extensive surveillance.

The investigation into this illicit network began in November 2022, leading to the arrest of 14 individuals, including two doctors. Authorities uncovered a clandestine manufacturing unit in Sonipat, Haryana, and a warehouse in Tronica City, Uttar Pradesh, where counterfeit medications were produced and stored. The syndicate’s modus operandi involved refilling empty vials of expensive cancer drugs with inexpensive substances like antifungal agents and selling them at exorbitant prices ranging from ₹1 lakh to ₹3 lakh per vial.

Alam played a pivotal role in distributing these fake medications in Kolkata and coordinating shipments to Bangladesh, where they were supplied to an associate identified as Dr. Rasel. He also managed financial transactions, collecting payments from unsuspecting patients and transferring proceeds to co-conspirators after retaining his share.

Following the arrest of his associates, Alam went into hiding, maintaining a low profile. His capture marks a significant milestone in dismantling the counterfeit drug network that jeopardized the lives of countless cancer patients.
