Kemira and Bluepha Join Forces to Commercialize Fully Bio-Based Barrier Coatings in Asia Pacific

Kemira, a leading global supplier of sustainable chemical solutions, and Shanghai Bluepha Microbiology Technology Co., a leading synthetic biology company, have reached a three-year strategic collaboration to promote the large-scale application of PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoates) in fully bio-based barrier coatings for paper, paperboard and molded fibers, contributing to sustainable packaging and the elimination of plastic waste. PHA-based water-based barrier coatings are heat-sealable and have excellent oil, water and grease barrier properties.

Through this collaboration, Kemira and Bluepha will systematically introduce PHA materials into paper barrier coatings, such as food packaging, paper labels, paperboard and molded fiber applications, accelerating the traditional paper industry's transition to a low-carbon, sustainable future.
