EFSA Declares Xanthan Gum Safe for Animal Feed Except Cats and Aquatic Species
On June 21, 2025, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published its scientific opinion on the safety of xanthan gum as a feed additive for all animal species, excluding cats and aquatic species. The evaluation was conducted by the FEEDAP Panel at the request of the European Commission.
The assessment confirmed that xanthan gum, produced using Xanthomonas campestris strains ATCC SD-7012, DSM 23730, and CNCM I-4861, poses no safety concerns for the target species, consumers, or the environment under the recommended conditions of use.
The panel found that this additive:
- Is safe for all animal species within the scope of the evaluation.
- Does not pose risks to consumer safety when used in animal nutrition.
- Is environmentally safe.
For user safety, xanthan gum was determined to not irritate skin or act as a sensitizer. However, due to insufficient data, the panel could not conclude whether it may irritate the eyes.
This decision paves the way for wider adoption of xanthan gum in animal feed, ensuring its technological benefits while maintaining safety for animals, humans, and the ecosystem.
