Summary of Last Year's Global Orange Production and Market Forecast
Orange
Global Situation
Total global orange production is forecast to increase by 3.6 million t to 49.4 million t in 2020/2021 compared to the previous year, mainly due to favorable weather and increased production in Brazil and Mexico, offsetting declining production in Turkey and the United States.
As a result, global orange consumption, processing and export volumes will also rise.
Brazil
Good weather will favor the flowering and fruiting of oranges, and total orange production in Brazil is expected to increase by 14% in 2020/2021 to 16.9 million t. Consumption of fresh oranges will remain at the same level as the previous year, while processing will increase by 2 million t to 12.2 million t.
Mexico
Total orange production in Mexico is expected to recover from last year's drought in 2020/2021, rebounding by more than half to 4.0 million t. As supply increases, so will consumption and processing.
China
Under favorable weather conditions, total orange production in China is expected to increase slightly to 7.5 million t in 2020/2021. consumption will increase in line with production, while processing is expected to decrease. Imports are expected to be at the same level as last year, and the main suppliers will continue to be Egypt, South Africa, Australia, the US and the EU.
EU
Total EU orange production is expected to increase by 6% to 6.6 million t in 2020/2021 due to favorable weather conditions and the start of new orchard plantings in Italy. imports will decline, while fresh consumption, processing and exports are expected to rise due to increased supply.
The United States
Total U.S. orange production is expected to decline by 13% to 4.1 million t in 2020/2021, while orange production in Florida is expected to fall by 20%. Fresh consumption, exports and processing are all expected to fall in line with the decline in production, although imports are expected to rise.
Egypt
The increasing area of orchards in production, combined with favorable weather during flowering and fruit set, is expected to increase total Egyptian orange production by 200,000 t to 3.4 million t in 2020/2021. consumption, processing and exports are all expected to increase in line with higher supply. The main export markets are expected to remain the EU, Russia, Saudi Arabia and China.
South Africa
Total South African orange production is expected to increase by 3% to 1.7 million t in 2020/2021 due to expected normal weather conditions, increased acreage of high-yielding late-ripening varieties and improved water management. exports are expected to rise slightly to 1.3 million t, accounting for more than a quarter of global trade. The EU is expected to remain the largest market for South Africa, accounting for more than 1/3 of South Africa's exports.
Turkey
Total orange production in Turkey is expected to decline by 20% to 1.4 million t in 2020/2021, mainly due to hot weather and strong winds affecting the normal flowering of oranges. Consumption, exports and processing will all decline in line with the reduced supply.
Morocco
Total orange production in Morocco is expected to rebound by more than 1/3 to 1.1 million t in 2020/2021, due to good weather and the start of new orchard plantings. Consumption, exports and processing are also expected to increase.
