40% from green hydropower! WACKER Uses Electricity at Silicon-Metal Production Site in Hola, Norway

ECHEMI 2022-03-31

WiseNews: On March 24, about 40 percent of the electricity used at WACKER's silicon-metal production site in Hola, Norway, will come from green hydropower in the future. WACKER has signed a corresponding contract with Statkraft for this purpose.

Statkraft will supply a total of 2.35 TWh of certified Norwegian hydropower to WACKER's Hola site from January 2022 to December 2027, of which around 525 GWh will be supplied by the Svean hydroelectric plant under a green power purchase agreement (PPA). The agreement is part of WACKER's strategy to increase the use of renewable power at its sites.

WACKER's energy-intensive silicon metal production process in Hola is one of its most important raw materials, which is required for the production of silicones and ultrapure polysilicon.

"Switching to green power in our production processes is one of the key 'levers' for achieving our sustainability goals, and the Hola site is the first step in this direction." Dr. Herda, WACKER's President and CEO, said, "In the short to medium term, we will purchase more green power in Norway and Europe to gradually expand the proportion of our green power usage."

"We are very pleased to be able to contribute to WACKER's goals regarding electricity consumption and greenhouse gas emissions reduction." Mr Hallvard Granheim, Executive Vice President Marketing and IT (EVP) at Statoil, said, "At the same time, we are doing so to safeguard the stability of our company and energy-intensive industries."

Statoil works closely with energy-intensive industries in Norway and the Nordic countries, securing electricity for industry through short and long-term contracts, and has signed new agreements with a number of industrial companies over the past few years, some of which are valid until 2039.
