Organic molecules are sometimes found within meteorites
Organic molecules are sometimes found within meteorites and the Earth's surface. These molecules are found in the form of minerals on Earth and carried to Earth by meteorites. When analyzing these molecules, it is important for scientists to distinguish between synthesized and natural organic molecules. Here are a few examples of organic molecules that are found both within meteorites and our planet;
1. Paper mill effluent
This is a wastewater stream from a paper mill. It may contain inorganic and organic components. Users of this stream use it as an irrigation source for their lands, but due to the high fertility, it has been observed to increase the toxicity of local wells, streams and rivers.
2. Volcanic gases
These are called volcanic gases because they come from volcanoes. They can be used for fertilizers and in the production of plastics. However, their properties are unknown as there are only a few studies to determine their composition. Organic molecules are sometimes found within meteorites and with many benefits.
3. Old landfill gas
This gas is a mixture of methane and hydrogen sulfide, which is present at landfills. It is usually monitored with sensors that detect methane odor, but only a few companies have developed sensors that detect hydrogen sulfide odor. When using this gas as fertilizer, it produces more side products than nitrogen fertilizer due to the presence of hydrogen sulfide.
4. Surface oil seeps
When oil leaks out of a storage tank into the ground and mixes with the surrounding rock, this mixture is known as surface oil seeps. This oil eventually reaches an aquifer and is used for drinking water. The process in which it travels from the storage area to the aquifer is called ground-water pollution; however, it can be removed by flushing the lines before drinking.
5. Volcanoes on Io (moon of Jupiter)
Io's volcanoes are called tenuous atmosphere volcanic eruptions because they are not connected to a solid crust like Earth's volcanoes are. Io's volcanoes are made of frozen lava, which comes alive when it is heated by Io or Jupiter.
6. Compost
Compost is a mixture of organic and inorganic components. Its main function is to return organic matter to the soil in the form of humus, which is a beneficial product. It has been used by farmers as fertilizer for a long time; however, today it has many other uses such as composted sewage sludge, mushroom substrates and fuel briquettes.
7 Water hyacinths
Water hyacinths are flowering plants that live in tropical and subtropical bodies of water around the world. They were originally introduced to water bodies as a means of controlling water levels, but today they are used as fertilizer. Organic molecules are sometimes found within meteorites and the earth crust.
8. Oil shale
Oil shale is a sedimentary rock that consists of kerogen, which is a substance found in plants and animals; otherwise it is also known as petroleum shale. The content of kerogen in oil shale varies greatly depending on the geologic conditions under which it was buried; however, the largest deposits are found in Colorado and Wyoming. The kerogen is converted into oil by heating which comes from the underground heat sources created by pressure, sunlight and bacteria.
9. Peat moss
Peat moss is a soil that is composed of partially decayed organic matter, which can be used as a fertilizer. It has been used for a long time to raise soil pH and create nutrient-rich soil that increases the yield in agricultural operations. It also helps in reducing erosion and ground settlement by storing water in the soil. It is widely used around the world as fertilizer due to its ability to improve soils under different conditions.
10. Groundwater
Groundwater is naturally occurring water below the Earth's surface that can flow through cracks and spaces in the soil, rocks and other pores. It is known as a permanent water source because it does not evaporate like surface water does. There are currently about 10,500 water wells in the United States that use groundwater.
11. Black oil shale (a type of coal)
Black oil shale is also known as carbonaceous shale or kerogen, which is a rock that holds large amounts of organic matter, such as animal and plant residues. The life cycle of black oil shale starts when plants and animals die and fall on the Earth. Their decomposition results in the release of oxygen, which then attracts microorganisms to eat out the organic matter in the form of oil or gas, which contain hydrogen sulfide.
In conclusions, there are a lot of organic molecules in the universe and in the planet earth. The diversity of their properties makes them useful in agriculture, industry and daily life.
