ABRAFATI Award for Science in Paints
The Abrafati Award for Science in Paints is recognized as the main one in its field in the country. It was created in 1987 to encourage research and contribute to the technological development of the paint industry in Brazil, also stimulating greater integration between universities and industry.
Throughout its 22 editions, the Abrafati Award has managed to attract a set of high-level papers, confirming that there is a lot of relevant research being done in Brazil: more than 240 papers were submitted for evaluation. Of these, 54 studies were recognized - the award was initially granted to the 1st and 2nd places, but later it was extended to the 3rd place as well - having as authors 103 specialists from the companies in the sector, from the most renowned universities and from the main centers of excellence in research in the country.
Many of the winning studies resulted in significant improvements in processes, product development and raw materials, advances in the environmental field, and other aspects. In addition, some of them gave rise to more in-depth studies, stimulating the scientific development related to paints.
Showing the harmony between research and the demands of the market and of society, the search for advances related to sustainability and to the improvement of paint properties is a constant in the winning works. Among the main topics studied, the use of raw materials from renewable sources, the use of materials with lower toxicity and environmental impact, the use of waste from industrial processes in the production of paints, as well as the increase in production efficiency by reducing the use of inputs stand out.
Developments related to adding new functionalities to paints are also part of the broad catalog of work stimulated by this award. The use of nanotechnology resources and the search for new techniques against the emergence of micro-organisms are examples in this field, as well as several improvements in the area of anti-corrosion paints.
Stay tuned for the deadline!
