What Is Ferric Chloride

Ferricchloride is a covalent inorganic compound with the chemical formula FeCl3. Itis a black-brown crystal, and also has a flake shape with a melting point of306 °Cand a boiling pointof316 °C[1]. It is easily soluble in water and has strong water absorption. It canabsorb moisture in the air and deliquescence. When FeCl3 is precipitated fromthe aqueous solution, six crystal waters are FeCl3 6H2O, and ferric chloridehexahydrate is an orange crystal. Ferric chloride is a very important iron salt.

What Is Ferric Chloride Used for

√  Used as Mordants

Potassium ferric sulfate, ferric chloride, and ferrous chlorideare also used as mordants in different types of dyes such as alizarin, methylviolet, and ninhydrin. Potassium ferric sulfate and ferric chloride are used asdye mordants for wool and silk, whereas, ferrous chloride is used as a dyemordant for cotton. All these can be synthesized from the iron which is themajor component of this compound.

Copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn) can causehalitosis, taste symptoms, taste changes, skin/eye irritation, breathingannoyance, loss of taste and swallowing discomfort. They also interfere withnormal red blood cell function by inhibiting hemoglobin formation when they arepresent in excess. Iron compounds such as ferric chloride have been wellstudied and found to be effective at reducing nitrate levels in the well water.This is usually done once when the borehole is first installed and thenannually.

Formic acid is produced by combining acetylenewith hydrogen chloride at high temperatures in a non-reactive container using acatalyst such as zinc powder or ferric chloride or calcium chloride.
