The proportion of coal consumption in China has been reduced to below 60%

ECHEMI 2020-01-21

According to the report 2019 on energy saving and low carbon development of China's iron and steel industry issued by China Metallurgical Industry Planning and Research Institute at the third member congress of metallurgical industry energy saving Professional Committee of China Energy Conservation Association, the pace of optimization of China's energy consumption structure has been accelerated. The proportion of coal consumption in primary energy has declined rapidly from 67.4% in 2013 to 59.0% in 2018, and the proportion of coal consumption is the first time Reduce to less than 60%. At the same time, clean energy consumption increased from 15.5% in 2013 to 22.1% in 2018, and the development of renewable energy accelerated, according to the report. The share of industry in total energy consumption has been decreasing continuously, from 70.8% in 2012 to 65.7% in 2017, down 5.1 percentage points. From 2013 to 2018, China's energy consumption overall maintained growth, from 4.169 billion tons of standard coal in 2013 to 4.640 billion tons of standard coal in 2018.

The total energy consumption increased sharply, slowing down first and then increasing. The elasticity coefficient of energy consumption shows a U-shaped change. In 2015, it finally dropped to 0.13 in 2016-2018 and rose continuously for three years. In 2018, it returned to 0.50, indicating that the economic development greatly depends on the growth of energy consumption. The report also forecasts energy conservation targets for 2020. It is predicted that the total energy consumption of China's iron and steel industry will decrease year-on-year in 2020 when the output is reduced by 0.60%; the average comprehensive energy consumption per ton of steel in the iron and steel industry will be 550 kg of standard coal, down 0.54% year-on-year. Li Xinchuang, President of China Metallurgical Industry Planning and Research Institute, said that in 2020, energy conservation work should optimize the layout of iron and steel industry, do a good job in energy conservation assessment, optimize the structure of iron and steel production process, carry out the whole process of energy conservation diagnosis, select advanced and applicable energy conservation technology, and integrate energy conservation work with China's policies.
