Chronic bronchitis in the elderly
Chronic bronchitis is a chronic nonspecific inflammation of the tracheobronchial mucosa and surrounding tissues caused by infectious or non-infectious factors. Its pathological characteristics are hyperplasia of bronchial mucous glands and increased mucus secretion. Clinically, it manifests as symptoms such as cough, sputum or wheezing for more than 2 consecutive years and more than 3 months each year. The disease has an insidious onset, with mild symptoms in the early stage, mostly occurring in winter and relieved after the spring warms up; in the later stage, symptoms worsen and exist all year round. The course of the disease is prolonged and recurrent, and emphysema and cor pulmonale may often occur.
