Physical and chemical properties	Properties: white or milky white crystalline powder. Melting point 158-160. Soluble in hot water, slightly soluble in ethanol, slightly soluble in water or chloroform, very slightly soluble in ether. It tastes bitter and slightly salty. Preparation method: It is obtained by the addition of 2-methyl -5-nitroimidazole (see 25010) and ethylene oxide. Dissolve 2-methyl-5-nitroimidazole in Formic acid, add ethylene oxide successively at 30-40°C, and add sulfuric acid in the middle of the feed. After adding, react for 1h. Retract Formic acid under reduced pressure, add water to dissolve, cool to 10 ℃, and filter. The filtrate is adjusted to pH = 10 with sodium hydroxide solution, placed for cooling, filtered, and washed with water until near-medium reconstruction. Recrystallization with water. activated carbon decolorization, metronidazole is obtained. Uses: This product has been used for the treatment of vaginal trichomoniasis since 1959, and has been used for intestinal and exoamoebiasis since 1970. It has high curative effect, low toxicity and wide application. It has mutagenic and teratogenic effects on animal experiments.
