What is Methyl cellulose ?

MC is the most important commercial cellulose ether.It is also the simplest derivative where methoxy groups have replaced the hydroxyl groups. The most important properties of this nonionic polymer are its water solubility and its gelation when exposed to heat. Although soluble in water, films made from methyl cellulose usually retain their strength and do not become tacky when exposed to humidity. These water soluble polymers are excellent thickeners, binders, and film formers for a variety of applications including ceramic extrusion, adhesives, coatings, inks, and agrochemicals. Solutions of methylcellulose will reversible gel under heat to a rigid gel structure providing a controllable boost in green strength.

Methyl cellulose, also known as cellulose methyl eth er, abbreviated as MC (MethylCellulose abbreviation), is a long-chain replacement cellulose. The average molecular weight of methyl cellulose is 10,000 ~ 220,000, white powder or fibrous substance at room temperature, non-toxic, non-irritating, non-allergenic effect, apparent relative density 0.35 ~ 0.55 (truth to density 1.26 ~ 1.30). Dissolves in water into a translucent viscous colloidal solution, neutral to litmus, , ether and chlorofo rm, soluble in glacial. Resistant to the action of acids, alkalis, micro-organisms, heat, light, etc. It is also unaffected by oil and grease, but will burn when it reaches its ignition point.

Solutions of methylcellulose are stable to alkalis and dilute acids at pH 3–11, at room temperature. At pH less than 3, acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of the glucose–glucose linkages occurs and the viscosity of methylcellulose solutions is reduced.On heating, solution viscosity is reduced until gel formation occurs at approximately 50°C;
