Colistin sulfate is  a polypeptide antibiotic belonging to the polymyxin group, primarily used to treat infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. It works by disrupting the bacterial cell membrane. It's often considered a last-resort treatment due to the emergence of resistance to other antibiotics .

Pharmacological action

The bactericidal activity of mucilage sulfate is mainly due to the structure of its molecular structure with three key active groups of fatty acids, positively charged amino acids and cyclic peptides. Lack or change of any one of these structures will greatly reduce its bactericidal activity. Viscidin sulfate plays a bactericidal role, mainly positively charged free amino acids, can be combined with the negatively charged phosphate in the phospholipids in the plasma membrane of bacterial cells, so that the surface tension of the bacterial plasma membrane is reduced, and destroy the integrity of the cell membrane, increase the permeability of the cell membrane, so that the main components of the cell, especially purines, pyrimidines and so on, from the cell plasma, thus resulting in the growth of the bacteria is inhibited or causing the bacteria to die. Death. Because the cell membrane of Gram-negative bacteria contains a large amount of phospholipids, while the cell membrane of Gram-positive bacteria contains very little phospholipids, so the antibacterial effect of Mucorbicin Sulfate is the strongest effect on Gram-negative bacteria.
