1. Description

Corosolic acid is a naturally occurring pentacyclic triterpenoid compound belonging to the usulanic acid class. Its chemical name is 2α-hydroxyursolic acid, and it is widely distributed in various plants, including Lagerstroemia grandiflora, loquat leaves, Schisandra chinensis, and Panax ginseng. It appears as a white to off-white powder, with the molecular formula C₃₀H₄₈O₄ and a molecular weight of approximately 472.70 Da. The compound is highly hydrophobic and has poor solubility in water; its oral absorption rate is about 30%, resulting in limited bioavailability. It is soluble in organic solvents such as dimethyl sulfoxide and ethanol. Storage conditions require protection from light and storage in a sealed container at -20°C. Corosolic acid exhibits various biological activities, including antidiabetic, anti-obesity, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antitumor, and cardioprotective effects, making it a research focus in the fields of functional foods and pharmaceuticals in recent years.

2. Application

(1) Research on Antidiabetic Effects and Blood Glucose Regulation: Used in basic and clinical research on type 2 diabetes, it improves postprandial blood glucose levels by promoting glucose uptake, enhancing the body’s ability to utilize glucose, and inhibiting the activity of carbohydrate-absorbing enzymes such as α-glucosidase and α-amylase. Clinical studies have shown that a standardized extract containing corosolic acid can reduce blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes by approximately 30%.

(2) Obesity and Weight Management Research: Used in studies on obesity and metabolic syndrome, it exerts weight-reducing effects by inhibiting fat synthesis, promoting fat breakdown, and regulating lipid metabolism.
