1. Description

Octenidine is a high-efficiency mild functional raw material with stable chemical properties. 2. Application

(2) Mucosal Disinfection: Used for disinfection and antimicrobial treatment of oral mucosa, genital mucosa, the urethral opening, and other areas; it may be used as an adjunctive treatment for infectious diseases such as stomatitis, gingivitis, and vaginitis.

(3) Obstetric and Neonatal Care: Used for disinfection of the birth canal and umbilical cord care in newborns to prevent perinatal infections.

(4) Medical Equipment and Surface Disinfection: Used for the disinfection of medical devices and surfaces in hospital environments.

(5) Research Applications: Used as an antimicrobial agent in microbiological experiments, the development of antimicrobial materials, and the evaluation of disinfection efficacy.

3. Main Efficacy

(1) Broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity: It rapidly kills common pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Proteus spp. It is equally effective against fungi such as Candida albicans. Compared to other cationic disinfectants like polyhexamethylene biguanide, otidine exhibits stronger activity against Gram-negative bacteria and achieves faster onset of action.

(2) Disruption of Cell Membrane Structure: Through electrostatic interactions between the cationic head group and the phospholipids of the bacterial cell membrane, it inserts into the lipid bilayer, alters membrane permeability, and causes the leakage of small molecules such as intracellular potassium ions and nucleotides, ultimately leading to bacterial death. This mechanism of action is unlikely to induce bacterial resistance.

(3) Long-lasting antimicrobial activity: It forms a residual active layer on the skin and mucosal surfaces, providing continuous antimicrobial protection for several hours. Compared to chlorhexidine, otidine maintains strong activity even in the presence of serum proteins and is less susceptible to interference from organic matter.

(4) Promotion of Wound Healing: In chronic wounds such as pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, and venous ulcers, it creates a favorable environment for wound healing by effectively controlling biofilms and infections. Studies have shown that otidine-containing dressings promote granulation tissue formation and shorten healing time.

(5) Low irritation: At recommended concentrations (typically 0.05%–0.1%), it causes minimal irritation to the skin and mucous membranes and is non-sensitizing, making it suitable for disinfecting sensitive areas such as the oral cavity and genital mucosa. Compared to disinfectants like ethanol and povidone-iodine, it does not cause a noticeable burning sensation or pain after topical application.
