Physical Properties

• Appearance: Colorless, transparent liquid.
• Odor: Odorless.
• Density: Varies depending on the concentration, but generally ranges from ~1.0 to 1.2 g/cm³ (heavier than water).
• Solubility: Highly soluble in water, forming a strongly alkaline solution. It also dissolves readily in ethanol.
• pH Level: Highly basic, typically ranging from 12 to 14 depending on the molarity.

Chemical Properties

• Strong Alkalinity & Corrosiveness: As a strong base, it dissociates completely in water to release hydroxide ions (OH⁻). It is highly corrosive and can cause severe tissue damage upon contact with skin or eyes.
• Reactivity with Acids & Gases: It undergoes vigorous neutralization reactions with acids to form lithium salts and water. Like other alkali metal hydroxides, it readily absorbs carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the air to form lithium carbonate (Li₂CO₃). Therefore, solutions must be stored in tightly sealed containers.
• Thermal Hazards: Non-flammable itself, but reacts exothermically with acids and certain metals. If heated to decomposition, it emits toxic fumes containing lithium oxides.
• Toxicity & Irritation: Classified as highly corrosive and toxic. Direct contact causes severe chemical burns, ulceration, and potential blindness if splashed into the eyes. Inhalation of aerosols or mists severely irritates the respiratory tract and mucous membranes. Strict personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory when handling.

Main Applications

• Lithium-Ion Battery Manufacturing: This is currently the most critical application. High-purity lithium hydroxide solutions are extensively used as a precursor for synthesizing cathode materials, such as nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) and nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) ternary materials, which are essential for electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage systems.
• Carbon Dioxide Absorption: Utilized in closed-loop life support systems, such as those in spacecraft, submarines, and rebreathers, to chemically scrub and remove exhaled CO₂ from the air by converting it into solid lithium carbonate and water.
• Ceramics & Glass Industry: Employed as a fluxing agent in the production of specialty glasses and ceramics. It lowers the melting temperature, improves thermal shock resistance, and enhances the durability of the final products.
• Water Treatment & Chemical Synthesis: Used to adjust pH levels in industrial water treatment processes. Additionally, it serves as a versatile reagent in organic synthesis and as a raw material for manufacturing various other lithium compounds and lubricating greases.
