Chemical Properties

• Reactivity & Functional Groups: It contains both a thiol (-SH) group and a carboxylic acid moiety, making it a highly reactive compound. It serves as a versatile acetylthiolating agent and nucleophile. It readily undergoes Michael additions with α,β-unsaturated aldehydes, ketones, and nitroolefins. It also acts as a nucleophilic ring-opening reagent for three-membered heterocycles.
• Hydrolysis & Instability: It is relatively stable at room temperature but decomposes into acetic acid and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) upon exposure to water, strong bases, or oxidizing agents.
• Flammability & Thermal Hazards: Highly flammable. Its heavy vapors can travel along the ground to distant ignition sources and flash back. When burned or heated to high temperatures, it releases toxic and corrosive fumes containing sulfur oxides.
• Toxicity & Irritation: Classified as highly toxic and corrosive. It is harmful if swallowed or absorbed through the skin. Its vapors are strongly irritating to the eyes, nose, throat, and respiratory tract, acting as a mild lachrymator (tear gas).

Main Applications

• Organic Synthesis Reagent: Widely utilized as an acetylthiolating and mercapto-grouping agent in fine chemical manufacturing. It is extensively used to prepare thioesters (such as converting alcohols to thiolacetates via Mitsunobu reactions) and to synthesize complex sulfur-containing compounds like thioctic acid (alpha-lipoic acid), cysteine derivatives, and mercaptocarboxylic acids.
• Pharmaceutical Intermediates: Employed as a crucial building block in the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). It is used to manufacture drugs such as captopril, modify cephalosporin antibiotics, and produce various antidotes and hormone modifiers.
