      Product Detail

Product Name: Methanol (also known as Methyl Alcohol or Wood Alcohol)
    Chemical Formula: CH₃OH
    CAS Number: 67-56-1

    Physical Properties

    • Appearance: Colorless, transparent liquid.
    • Odor: Mild, slightly sweet, and alcoholic odor.
    • Melting Point: Approximately -97.6 °C.
    • Boiling Point: Around 64.7 °C.
    • Density: ~0.79 g/cm³ at 20 °C (lighter than water).
    • Solubility: Completely miscible with water, ethanol, ether, and most common organic solvents.
    • Flash Point: Approximately 11–12 °C, making it a highly flammable liquid. Its vapors can easily form explosive mixtures with air.

    Chemical Properties

    • Reactivity: As the simplest alcohol, it readily undergoes typical alcohol reactions, including oxidation (to formaldehyde or formic acid), esterification, and dehydration.
    • Combustion: It burns in air with a pale blue, nearly invisible flame, producing carbon dioxide and water vapor.
    • Thermal Decomposition: When heated to high temperatures, it decomposes into hazardous gases, including carbon monoxide and formaldehyde.
    • Incompatibility: Chemically incompatible with strong oxidizing agents, strong acids, alkali metals, and reducing agents. Contact with these substances can trigger violent exothermic reactions or fire hazards.
    • Toxicity: Highly toxic if swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed through the skin. In the human body, it is metabolized into formic acid and formaldehyde, which can cause severe metabolic acidosis, permanent blindness, central nervous system depression, and even death.

    Main Applications

    • Chemical Building Block: This is its largest industrial application. Methanol is primarily converted into formaldehyde, which is then used to manufacture resins, plastics, and adhesives. It is also a key precursor for producing acetic acid, MTBE (methyl tert-butyl ether), and other essential chemicals.
    • Fuel & Energy Sector: Used directly as an alternative fuel or blended with gasoline (e.g., M85) to reduce emissions. It is also a critical feedstock in the production of biodiesel via transesterification and is gaining traction as a hydrogen carrier in fuel cell technologies.
    • Industrial Solvent: Widely employed as a versatile solvent in the manufacturing of paints, varnishes, inks, dyes, and pharmaceuticals due to its excellent solvency and rapid evaporation rate.
    • Antifreeze & De-icing: Utilized as an antifreeze agent in pipelines and automotive windshield washer fluids, as well as a de-icing fluid for aircraft.

    Appearance:

Methanol appears as a colorless fairly volatile liquid with a faintly sweet pungent odor like that of ethyl alcohol. Completely mixes with water. The vapors are slightly heavier than air and may travel some distance to a source of ignition and flash back. Any accumulation of vapors in confined spaces, such as buildings or sewers, may explode if ignited. Used to make chemicals, to remove water from automotive and aviation fuels, as a solvent for paints and plastics, and as an ingredient in a wide variety of products.
