Diethylene glycol (DEG), with its excellent solubility, hygroscopicity, low-temperature antifreeze properties, and chemical stability, is used in core applications across a wide range of industrial sectors. In the polyester resin industry, it serves as a modifying monomer for the synthesis of unsaturated polyesters and alkyd resins, enhancing the resin’s flexibility and adhesion, and is suitable for the production of coatings and adhesives; In the solvent sector, it dissolves dyes, oils, and resins, serving as a leveling agent in textile printing and dyeing and as a leather softener, thereby improving the uniformity of fabric dyeing and the softness of leather. Antifreeze and brake fluid are its primary applications, where it significantly lowers the freezing point while providing rust and corrosion protection, making it suitable for industrial circulating water systems and automotive low-temperature protection systems. It is also used as an extraction solvent for natural gas and aromatics to separate and purify chemical raw materials; in the tobacco industry, it serves as a humectant to maintain the moisture content of tobacco leaves; and it can function as a base material for producing diethylene glycol diphthalate plasticizers, enhancing the cold resistance and toughness of PVC products. Strict control is required in food and pharmaceutical contact applications, as this substance is toxic. Its use in food or as an oral excipient is strictly prohibited; it is limited to compliant industrial applications only.
