9-Methyl-β-carboline (9-Me-BC) is a heterocyclic amine of the β-carboline family and is a synthetic research chemical. It is a  derivative of β-carboline. The chemical structure of 9-Me-BC consists of a β-carboline core and a methyl group attached to the 9 position of the pyridinium[3,4-b]indole ring system. 9-Me-BC does not appear to have any known natural sources. 9-Me-BC enhances cognition through multiple mechanisms. It upregulates tyrosine hydroxylase, the rate-limiting enzyme in dopamine synthesis, leading to increased dopamine levels. 9-Me-BC also inhibits monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity, preventing the breakdown of dopamine and other monoamine neurotransmitters.
