World's largest container ship left China with record load

On May 8, the world's largest container ship "HMM Algeciras" of Hyundai Merchant Marine left Yantian International Container Terminal with "fully loaded", setting a new world record in freight volume.
 
"HMM Algeciras" is about 400 meters long, 61 meters wide and 33.2 meters high, with a maximum speed of 22.5 knots, a capacity of 23 people, registered as Panama flag, and a maximum of 23,964 standard containers, making it the largest container ship put into operation in the world.
 
"HMM Algeciras" docked at Busan New Port on April 28, loaded with 7156TEU cargo, and set sail on April 30. After that, the ship arrived in Yantian via Ningbo and Shanghai, and on May 8, it sailed to Europe with the maximum freight volume of 19621TEU.
 
Prior to HMM Algeciras, the maximum cargo volume record was set by MSC Gulsun, a 23756TEU super large container ship operating in the Mediterranean Sea, with a cargo volume of 19574TEU. However, HMM Algeciras left Yantian with a cargo volume of 19,621TEU, a world record 47TEU higher than that of MSC Gulsun.
 
Hyundai's 12 24,000TEU VLCC ships, built by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Samsung Heavy Industries, will be delivered by September. With the 12 new ships, Hyundai will be able to add 288,000 TEU to its current fleet capacity of 450,000 TEU, making it the world's eighth-largest shipping company.
 
In addition to Daewoo Shipbuilding and Samsung Heavy Industries' 12 24000TEU VLCCs, HMM has ordered eight 15000TEU VLCCs from Hyundai Heavy Industries for delivery in the second quarter of 2021.
