Mitsubishi Chemical launched a new recycling type packaging material

ECHEMI 2020-07-27

Recently, Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation and Nippon Paper Co., Ltd. announced that the two companies have jointly developed a recycled packaging material made of biodegradable materials. The material uses two renewable raw materials: Mitsubishi Chemical's biodegradable resin "BioPBS" and Nippon Paper Company's paper barrier material "SHIELDPLUS".

Among them, BioPBS can be degraded into water and carbon dioxide under the action of natural microorganisms, which can reduce the impact on the natural environment. Compared with other biodegradable resins, this material has excellent properties such as low-temperature heat sealability, heat resistance, and flexibility. SHIELDPLUS is an environmentally friendly material that applies Nippon Paper's accumulated technology in papermaking and coating over the years, and provides oxygen and aroma barrier properties to "paper" that is a renewable recycling material and is biodegradable.

Mitsubishi Chemical said that in today's world, the problem of plastic waste requires a global response. In this context, products such as small food packaging and straws are gradually being replaced by degradable resins and paper materials. The packaging material developed this time uses renewable raw materials, is biodegradable, is a recyclable product, and has good barrier properties and heat sealability. In the near future, the company will further expand its sales around the packaging of Japanese confectionery and coffee beans.
