An outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza has occurred in Niger
According to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), on 26 December 2022, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of Niger reported to WOAH an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 in Niger.
According to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), on 26 December 2022, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of Niger reported to WOAH an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 in Niger.
The outbreak is in Tawa Province and was confirmed on 17 December 2022. The source of the outbreak is the illegal activity of animals. Laboratory testing found 4,920 birds suspected of infection, of which 4,870 became ill, 4,470 died and 450 were killed and disposed of.
As the outbreak continues, Niger's Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock will submit weekly follow-up reports.
