Panama has experienced its first outbreak of H5N1 highly pathogenic influenza A
According to the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), on 22 December 2022, Panama's Ministry of Agriculture reported to WOAH an outbreak of H5N1 highly pathogenic influenza A in Panama.
The outbreak occurred in Panama's exclusive Economic Zone and was confirmed on 20 December 2022. The source of the outbreak is unknown or uncertain. Laboratory tests revealed that one brown pelican became ill and died.
The outbreak is ongoing and Panama's Ministry of Agriculture will submit weekly follow-up reports.
