Mitsui Chemicals' bio-based bisphenol A officially started production of polyammonia carbonate
Japanese petrochemical company Mitsui Chemicals plans to supply bio-based bisphenol A (BPA) to other producer Mitsubishi Gas Chemical (MGC) for the production of bio-based polycarbonate at its Kashima plant in eastern Ibaraki Prefecture.
Mitsui Chemicals did not disclose the amount of biophenol A supplied to Mitsubishi Gas Chemical, nor did it disclose the planned production of bio-polycarbonate. Mitsubishi Gas Chemical also plans to use its methanol made from carbon dioxide, green hydrogen and recycled plastics to make polycarbonate in the coming years.
Since December 2021, Mitsui Chemicals has been purchasing bio-based naphtha from Finnish refiner Neste to produce bio-based petrochemicals such as ethylene, propylene, benzene, polypropylene, polyethylene and phenol. Mitsui Chemicals produces bio-based products through a mass balance method under the ISCC Plus certification program, an international certification for sustainability and carbon.
Before Mitsubishi Gas Chemical purchased bio-based BPA from Mitsui Chemicals, Japanese company Teijin also purchased Bio-based BPA from Mitsui Chemicals for the production of polycarbonate.
