Eu pork exports down 15% in 2022
A total of 5.203,900 tonnes of pork and pork products were exported by the EU in 2022, down 15% from 2021, when exports fell by a smaller 3%, exceeding 6 million tonnes for the second time. The main reason for the sharp decline in exports was the obvious decline in exports to China. China is a major EU pork export destination, and its imports of pork and pork products from the EU have decreased by 40 percent in 2022 (1,541,900 tons in 2022 and 2,574,600 tons in 2021). China accounted for 52% of the EU's total pork exports in 2020, and has been declining since then to 42% in 2021 and 30% in 2022. Pork exports to Hong Kong also fell by nearly 50 percent to 77,600 tons, ranking 13th (up from 283,600 tons in 2020, ranking fourth).
In 2022, EU pork exports to the UK, the second largest export destination, fell 9 percent to 811,300 tonnes, accounting for 16 percent. Japan and the Philippines were the third and fourth largest export destinations, with a share of 9% and 8% respectively, up 23% and 21% from 2021 to 466,500 tons and 422,600 tons, respectively. South Korea accounted for 6 percent, up 12 percent, to 318,200 tons in 2022.
