Syngenta has launched two insecticides based on lambda-cyhalothrin in Canada

2023-04-25

Syngenta Canada announced that it will sell limited quantities of Matador®120EC and Voliam Xpress® insecticides in western Canada, primarily for the 2023 gardening and legume crop planting season. The products will also be sold in eastern Canada, primarily for horticultural crops.

Syngenta made the distribution decision based on the Canadian Pest Management Authority's (PMRA) reassessment of the active ingredient lambda-cyhalothrin in Matador®120EC and Voliam Xpress. As of April 29, 2023, crops treated with lambda-cyhalothrin, including any harvested grain, screened seeds, hay/feed/silage, by-products or residues, are not edible for livestock in Canada.

Duane Johnson, Syngenta's head of sales in Canada, said: "We want to assist as many growers as possible during the upcoming planting season by protecting crops from pests while complying with the label's feed restrictions. Based on available market statistics and discussions with industry associations, most lambda-cyhalothrin-treated horticultural and legume crops are intended for human consumption only.”

"Importantly, lambda-cyhalothrin-treated legume crops are not currently available for use as feed and we will always comply with the label restrictions," said Anna Shulkin, Head of Plant Protection and Management at Syngenda Canada. We know the importance of this product to growers and the PMRA is still reviewing our application submitted in September 2021 to reinstate as much of this product as possible for use in livestock grain feed."

Growers should check the labelling restrictions on current products and are advised to consult with the Commodity association before using lambda-based products, which can be found at Syngenta.ca/products for the latest labelling information on Matador 120EC and Voliam Xpress insecticides.
