Investment banking report: M&A activity for vitamins & supplements slowed slightly but remains healthy

ECHEMI 2023-06-08

Investment banking company Capstone Partners (Boston) stated that inflationary pressures have not curbed consumer spending on vitamins and supplements. Capstone Partners released a "Vitamins and Supplements M&A Update" in May 2023, which pointed out a "slight slowdown" in M&A activity, but overall, investment in the industry remains "healthy".

The report points out that: "Economic uncertainty has led to some caution in the M&A market, leading to a slight slowdown in vitamin and supplement mergers and acquisitions so far this year, although activity remains healthy. Buyers have been patient, waiting for the trajectory of interest rates and the efficiency of the Federal Reserve's monetary tightening actions to improve. At the same time, potential sellers are seeking to improve market transparency to ensure optimal value and favorable trading structures. Although the headwind of mergers and acquisitions is expected to persist in the short term, the potential suspension of interest rate hikes in the coming months may provide momentum for the recovery of trading activity.”

Capstone pointed out that under inflationary pressure, the vitamin and supplement market is performing better than other markets.

“The latest acquisition report on vitamins and supplements by Capstone Partners demonstrates the resilience of the industry under inflationary pressure, "the report states. “Although discretionary spending has decreased in many categories, consumers continue to make the vitamin and supplement industry the main component of their purchasing behavior.”

However, consumers are looking for bang for their buck. The report points out that an increasing number of shoppers are seeking evidence of what companies claim their products can do, such as clinical research. They also require transparency in the source of ingredients. The report states: "This has created a world of buyers seeking scientifically supported suppliers of vitamins and supplements, especially those that meet the needs of immune function, cognitive and mental health, and digestive health, which have already aroused great interest from consumers.”

In short, despite concerns about economic recession and ongoing cost pressures, demand for vitamins and supplements in the industry is expected to remain strong by 2023.
