Cheniere Energy Announces Long-Term LNG Sale and Purchase Agreement with BASF
Cheniere Energy, Inc. (NYSE American: LNG) recently announced that its subsidiary, Cheniere Marketing, LLC, has entered into a long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) sale and purchase agreement (SPA) with BASF. Under the agreement, BASF has agreed to purchase up to approximately 0.8 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG from Cheniere Marketing on a free-on-board (FOB) basis. The purchase price will be indexed to the Henry Hub price, with an additional fixed liquefaction fee.
The deliveries are set to commence in mid-2026 and will increase to approximately 0.8 mtpa upon the start of commercial operations of Train Seven of the Sabine Pass Liquefaction Expansion Project (SPL Expansion Project) in Louisiana. The term of the SPA extends through 2043.
Cheniere's Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, Anatol Feygin, expressed satisfaction with the long-term partnership, highlighting the critical role of US natural gas in providing secure, sustainable, and affordable energy for Europe. He emphasized that the agreement supports one of Europe's major industrial consumers, BASF, in ensuring the stability of its supply chain.
Dr. Dirk Elvermann, BASF's Chief Financial Officer, stated that the agreement with Cheniere diversifies BASF's energy and raw materials portfolio amid critical changes in the European gas market. By reducing their dependence on fossil fuels, BASF aims to achieve its goal of net zero CO2 emissions by 2050, while ensuring a reliable supply of natural gas at competitive terms.
The SPL Expansion Project, which is being developed for up to approximately 20 mtpa of total LNG capacity, is progressing with certain subsidiaries of Cheniere Energy Partners entering the pre-filing review process with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
Cheniere Energy, Inc. is a leading producer and exporter of LNG in the United States, offering clean, secure, and affordable natural gas solutions globally. With one of the world's largest liquefaction platforms, Cheniere operates the Sabine Pass and Corpus Christi liquefaction facilities on the U.S. Gulf Coast, with additional production capacity under construction. The company is actively pursuing liquefaction expansion opportunities and other projects in the LNG value chain.
