Evonik Acquires Thai Peroxide Company
Evonik recently announced that it has fully acquired the former joint venture Thailand Peroxide Co., Ltd. (TPL) located in Saraburi, Thailand. The acquisition was successfully completed on December 15, marking Evonik's important strategic deployment in the global peroxide market.
As a global peroxide producer, Evonik is working to expand its offering of premium hydrogen peroxide and peracetic acid in the fast-growing Asia-Pacific market. The acquisition supports Evonik's Reactive Oxygen business line's strategic focus on specialized products for future applications.
Lauren Kjeldsen, head of Evonik’s Smart Materials division, said: “TPL’s expertise is perfectly aligned with Evonik’s goal of providing customized solutions to meet current and future challenges.” He added:" This includes providing clean, sustainable chemicals for high-demand applications. Electronics are an important example: the world needs microchips, and making microchips requires the production of hydrogen peroxide."
Michael Traxler, head of the Reactive Oxygen business line at Evonik, noted: “In the Reactive Oxygen business, we are particularly excited about the synergies being created between our employees at TPL and our colleagues in the region. When we acquired PeroxyChem in 2020, it was to strengthen the reactive oxygen business's strategic focus on expertise, customer proximity and sustainability. Now fully integrating TPL into the business line enables us to continue this development trajectory, including integrating our sustainability strategy across all production sites. "
Evonik has decided to expand its Polyvest HT plant in Marl, Germany, to expand its coatings and coating adhesive resins business line. The multi-million-euro investment is expected to increase its production capacity for hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB), which will be sold under the Polyvest brand.
Dr. Stefan Pfaffenbach, Head of Business Line, said: “This expansion is part of our ongoing efforts to provide even more reliable services to our customers around the world. In a highly competitive market, we are consolidating our position as a cost and innovation leader. "
The expansion comes ten years after production started at the HTPB plant in Marl. Production is backward integrated, with butadiene produced directly at the Marl plant in Germany, while the hydrogen peroxide is supplied by Evonik.
Polyvest brand HTPB is a liquid hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene produced by free radical polymerization. The polymer has a highly hydrophobic polybutadiene backbone and primary hydroxyl groups that allow precise chemical modification.
